Volunteers needed for canal cleanup

British Waterways is urging residents around Halifax to join in with a summer clean-up of their local canal on Saturday.

It is hoping to introduce regular waterways volunteering groups in the area, which will meet at least once a month, with those involved working on a variety of tasks from conserving historic structures and protecting wildlife habitats, to painting locks and sprucing up sites.

British Waterways is encouraging anyone who wants to do more to keep the Halifax Arm area of the Calder & Hebble navigation tidy to volunteer all year round. For the first working party, volunteers will be cutting back overgrown vegetation and clearing litter from the towpath and from the basin by The Watermill Pub.
