Volunteers needed to help conserve one of city's medieval treasures

A CAMPAIGN to recruit more volunteers to help preserve one of York’s most historic buildings will be staged this week as restoration gets under way.

Work is being carried out to conserve Treasurer’s House, which stands in the shadow of the city’s iconic Minster.

One volunteer, keen cyclist, Mark Ivkovic, is shown taking waste materiel from the property to be recycled. Recruitment days are being held on Friday and Saturday to sign up members of the public for both voluntary and paid work at the house, which dates from the medieval era.

The events are, however, being staged at the Monk Bar Hotel to allow restoration work to continue. The house is due to open to the public a month later than normal, on April 1.

A 35,000 project is underway to repair the lead in windows in the Great Hall, as well as replacing ultra-violet filters to protect furniture and artefacts inside the house from sunlight.

The house was restored between 1897 and 1930 by a wealthy local industrialist, Frank Green.
