Volunteers vow to protect vandal-hit cemetery

A GROUP of volunteers has vowed to help protect a Leeds cemetery from attacks by vandals.

The Friends of Lawnswood Cemetery, which includes relatives of some of those buried there, has been formed to restore and look after the historic graveyard.

Nearly all the buildings and some of the statues are Grade II listed.

In March around 20 gravestones were smashed, some beyond repair.

The group is holding a public meeting at Lawnswood Cemetery Chapel at 5.30pm tonight.

A working party will meet at the cemetery for the first time at 10am on October 29 to assess what work needs to be done.

It plans to meet on the first Saturday of each month from December.
