Volunteers wanted for final push to help valley's wildlife

CONSERVATION volunteers are set to complete a scheme of restoration works this weekend which have focused on improving wildlife habitats in Sheffield's Rivelin Valley.

Sheffield Wildlife Trust has led the Living Don – Rivelin Valley Restoration Programme and the final day of action takes place on Sunday at the Fox Hagg nature reserve.

The project has been run to restore the valley to what Wildlife Trust workers called its "full ecological functionality", allowing wildlife space to migrate and survive the effects of climate change.

Work completed so far includes the control of birch and bracken across the heathland, the removal of invasive plants along the River Rivelin, conservation of native riverside flora, and installation of bat boxes along the Rivelin Valley.

Hannah Witram, a community wildlife ranger at the Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham, said: "We would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped out so far, all the extra hands have made a big difference.

The work was funded by the Veolia Environmental Trust, which was set up by the company which collects Sheffield's rubbish.

Its executive director Margaret Cobbold, said: "The trust works to support community and environmental projects. It is great to see a scheme we have supported not only improve the area's biodiversity but also restore the nature reserve for the whole community to use and enjoy."

Sunday's conservation day is open to all members of the public.
