Hundreds more votes have been cast this year in a competition which is run by Welcome to Yorkshire in partnership with The Yorkshire Post. with the public nominating an exhaustive list of more than 700 pubs for the top award.

There have been 12 finalists every year since the competition began in 2011 but due to the unprecedented number of votes, the shortlist has been increased for 2017 to 15 for the first time.

A staggering 18,000 people voted in last year’s competition which saw The Bull Inn, in West Tanfield, crowned the county’s favourite local and the venue has again made the shortlist, along with fellow former champions The Carpenters Arms in Felixkirk near Thirsk and Shibden Mill Inn in Halifax.

City centre pubs, historic taverns and traditional country pubs all feature in the final line-up, including the Town Hall Tavern in Leeds and the Michelin-starred gastropub with rooms, The Star at Harome, on the edge of the North York Moors.

A second round of public voting is now open in which the finalists go head to head for the coveted title that will be awarded to the lucky winner during a special presentation to be held at the 159th Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate on Tuesday, July 11.

Two pubs will also be announced as runners-up.

The purpose of the competition is to showcase and celebrate Yorkshire’s amazing variety of pubs and the part they play in Yorkshire’s tourism economy - which is worth £7bn annually - and so every pub which makes it into the competition’s top 30 will be included in Welcome to Yorkshire’s forthcoming ‘Ale Trail’ publication.

On revealing the final shortlist, Sir Gary Verity, chief executive at Welcome to Yorkshire, commented: “I am delighted so many people have joined in with our search to find Yorkshire’s Favourite Pub.

Yorkshire is well known for being home to some fantastic ale houses and the huge number of votes we have received shows just how proud people are about the great offerings in our county.

“It is fantastic to see some former winners are still doing so well and have made it into the shortlist but there are plenty of other great names in the final 15 so it is anyone’s game – get voting!”

Voting ends on Friday, June 23 and is limited to one vote per person.
