Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions this afternoon (Wednesday) Ms Creagh asked PM David Cameron for assurances that Conservative members of the European Parliament will back new safety measures at a vote tomorrow.

Ms Creagh is part of a campaign started by the families of Horbury schoolchildren Bobby and Christi Shepherd who died of carbon monoxide poisoning while on holiday in Corfu in 2006.

She said: “The families dearest wish is that no other families suffer the heartbreak and tragedy that they have endured.

“Tomorrow, in the European Parliament there will be a vote of recommendation that the European Commission brings forward legislation to improve carbon monoxide safety and fire safety for tourism premises in the European Union.

“Can I ask the Prime Minister that his Members of European Parliament support the recommendation and if that motion falls will he look at instigating legislation nationally in this country?”

Mr Cameron said he remembered meeting Bobby and Christi’s families and the “great bravery” of their parents and would look at the recommendations drafting up by the European Parliament.

He said: “We have very strict legislation on particular things about fire resistant materials but I will look carefully at that.”
