Walker aims to hit peak form as he tackles 24-hour trek

A FATHER from Leeds will be cheered on by his wife and children when he attempts to walk Yorkshire’s famous Three Peaks twice in 24 hours.

Richard Barmby, 37, has tackled the famous walk several times before, but has never done it twice in one day.

It will mean about 50 miles of walking and scaling - twice - the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

The final part of his challenge, if he makes it, will be in the dark.

Mr Barmby, of Garforth, has raised £1,800 towards a £2,000 target for Leeds-based Candlelighters, the children’s cancer charity.

He will be cheered on this Saturday by his wife Emma and three children, Liam, 10, Kieran, five, and Holly, three.

His close friend, Richard Firn, and other friends have agreed to walk three peaks.

He said that the idea to walk the “six peaks” came after he had had a few drinks over Christmas.

And, although he has done some long-distance training walks, he admits that he is far from being super-fit.

“Going through the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale when everyone else is in the pub will be tough.

“I know what I am letting myself in for and I would not say that I am athlete. I am determined because a lot of sponsor money is riding on it, which gives me the motivation.

“I hope to do the first three peaks in under 10 hours, which will leave 14 hours for the second trip around.

“A total of 10 people will be supporting me, walking with me on various legs, but nobody will be doing more than three peaks.”
