Walking stick shopper wanted over lost bag

with her Marks & Spencer carrier bag and multicoloured walking stick, this woman looks like any other rail passenger.

But yesterday police issued these pictures because they think she may have taken a suitcase belonging to a man heading on holiday to Australia.

The woman was caught on CCTV on the Doncaster to Manchester Airport train and officers from British Transport Police said they were keen to trace her.

Pc Wayne Heslop, of BTP, said: “The man boarded the train with his wife at Doncaster station and placed his luggage, which included a laptop and all his possessions for a two-week holiday, in the luggage racks.

“As he checked his luggage at Sheffield station, he noticed that his bag had been taken.”

Officers said they had made wide-ranging efforts to track down the woman and had spoken to passengers who were on the train, which left Doncaster at 1.42pm on October 18 last year.

Police are hoping that the images from the journey will help them to identify the woman, who they believed to have “key information”.

PC Heslop added that officers were open to suggestion that there could be an innocent explanation for what happened.

He added: “We are unsure at this stage if the incident is an offence or a misunderstanding, so it is vital that we urge anyone who may recognise the woman to come forward and help us to determine the circumstances behind why the bag was taken from the train”.

The man who had his case stolen continued with his journey to Australia despite the incident.
