Wallpaper and follies vie for restoration award

Joanne Ginley

RESTORED Chinese wallpaper in Harewood House’s East Bedroom could win a top award against competition from rejuvenated follies and related buildings at Wentworth Castle Gardens, near Barnsley.

The two projects have been shortlisted in the northern category of a Country Life magazine contest for restoration celebrating the importance of recently-undertaken work to England's historic buildings.

The judges will visit the shortlisted projects between now and the end of September.

The 20 sheets of the hand-painted Chinese wallpaper were found in outbuildings of Harewood House, near Leeds, in 2008 and used in a bedroom when it was restored.

Research revealed the design was used by Chippendale’s workers in 1769.

A website – www.countrylife.co.uk/restorationofthecentury – has been opened to see if the public agrees with the judges.
