War event man hurt in accident

A MAN suffered a leg injury when a cartridge on a 25-pounder field gun backfired during a 1940s war extravaganza.

Heckmondwike's big weekend at the Ponderosa Rural Therapeutic Centre in Station Lane proved a massive draw, thousands of people flocking there.

One of the event organisers, Deborah Burton and a manager at Ponderosa, said: "Four or five men were firing a 25-pounder gun when the cartridge exploded. It just backfired and one of the men hurt his leg as he fell backwards. But he is fine. It was just one of those things."

The event is the brainchild of Howard Cook, who runs the Ponderosa complex and is also an avid military collector.
