Warm memories of cold winters spent skating captured by artist

THE frozen fields of yesteryear where children could happily skate for hours have been captured by artist Tom Harland.

The pastel work called Where we used to skate shows fields near North Ferriby where the artist played as a child in the 1950s.

Housing developments in the 1980s and 1990s have swallowed up most of the meadowland although one small pond and field has been preserved, as well as a stretch of hawthorn hedge. The number two print of a limited run of 75 of the wintry scene was recently raffled off, raising more than 600 for the Teenage Cancer Trust, which is developing facilities for younger people at Castle Hill Hospital.

Mr Harland recalled: "I was born at North Ferriby and when we were kids we used to skate and make bonfires on the bits which were higher. It was quite safe as it only flooded three to four inches deep and you could go a third of the way to Hessle. It was great fun."

Mr Harland is preparing for a major one-man show at Beverley Art Gallery and has 40 paintings to complete before then. He is also planning an exhibition at Castle Howard later this year in collaboration with the Trust.

Loose and framed copies of the print are for sale. Interested customers can visit his website at www.tomharland.com or call 01482 632028.
