Warning to city’s drug criminals

CRIMINALS in Wakefield are being warned to expect a rude awakening from a new police team.

The team has been formed to tackle drugs-related crime in the wake of Operation Grassland, which helped send dozens of drugs criminals to jail since it 2008 launch.

The team will take on drug trafficking, burglary, car crime and theft.

Chief Superintedent Marc Callaghan, Wakefield divisional commander, said: “Wakefield District is the safest area in West Yorkshire, solving the most crimes with the help of our communities. Operation Grassland has been a major success across the area by responding to information supplied by local communities about those suspected of dealing drugs.

“The new team will build on its success. Obviously we respond to reports of crime and incidents 24/7 but the Operation Grassland team will enable us to work to disrupt potential criminal activity and get to those people who are committing crime to fund a drugs habit.

“We are constantly listening to our communities and constantly monitoring crime trends to ensure we continue to be responsive.”
