Warning over open invite to thieves

The warning comes after a spate of burglaries where thieves got in through unlocked doors.

A laptop computer, a purse, a wallet, handbags, a mobile phone, cash and keys were all stolen during six burglaries in just over 24 hours at the weekend.

Pc Andy Allen, crime reduction officer for Hull, said: “Burglaries caused by open windows and doors can become more common in spring and summer, but we are urging people to make a stand against sneak thieves by keeping their windows and doors locked in unoccupied rooms.

“Sneak thieves are not master criminals but instead opportunists walking around residential areas looking for possible insecure properties.

“Therefore I would urge people to make sure that they always lock doors, as open doors are like an open invitation for sneak-in burglars who only need a few seconds to grab property from near a front door or worktop. Do the police and yourselves a favour and keep properties secure and keep burglars out.”
