Warning over rogue traders trying to buy gold on doorstep

ROGUE traders are exploiting the soaring price of gold and carrying out doorstep campaigns to pressure financially-stricken householders into parting with valuable jewellery.

Trading standards officers yesterday issued a warning to residents to be on their guard for unscrupulous traders who are going from door-to-door offering to buy gold items.

North Yorkshire County Council’s trading standards team has encountered three separate cases of cold-calling in the Northallerton and Selby areas in recent weeks.

And fears are growing that householders could be pressurised into selling valuable items for less than their true value.

The council’s executive member for trading standards, Coun Chris Metcalfe, said: “Our advice regarding doorstep traders has always been clear – do not deal with them.

“We are particularly concerned about these traders flouting laws which have been put in place specifically to protect the public and ensure a fair trading environment.

“We are also concerned about these traders taking advantage of those who are experiencing debt problems and who may make rash decisions about selling their valuables.”

The price of gold has soared by more than 25 per cent so far this year, prompting a wave of traders to look towards the precious metal as a lucrative investment.

Ongoing concerns over the global economic climate coupled with the unrest in the Middle East have helped the price rises, with gold hitting a record high of $1,920 (£1,226) an ounce this month.

Trading standards officials have now urged anyone who is considering selling property to get the items properly valued from bona fide businesses.

Coun Metcalfe added: “At a time when gold prices are at record levels, consumers need to ensure they get the best possible price available to them.

“They should also think very carefully about the risks associated with discussing their valuables with strangers at the door.

“Would you ordinarily discuss the valuables you have in your home with a complete stranger?”
