Warning over toll of drunken drivers

ALMOST six per cent of drivers tested by police in South Yorkshire during a month-long operation were found to under the influence of drink or drugs, new figures reveal.

During June, officers breathalysed 4,862 drivers at what they called "known drink-drive hot spots" and of those 277 or 5.7 per cent tested positive, or refused or failed to provide a breath test.

South Yorkshire's Chief Inspector for roads policing, Stuart Walne, said: "Despite our efforts, we still get situations where some people are up to four times over the limit and where others are double the drink-driving limit the morning after.

"It is clear that drink-driving kills people and is a factor in road collisions that can have a devastating effect on families and loved ones."

The figures come after the Association of Chief Police Officers said more young motorists were being caught nationally driving while under the influence.
