Warning as tyre 'prank' leaves car wrecked

A WOMAN whose car was wrecked when a large tyre rolled down a steep hill and smashed into it has warned the teenagers believed to be responsible that their pranks could end up killing someone.

Susan Grist called in police after the heavy tyre smashed into her 10-year-old Peugeot 306 estate, leaving it a write-off.

The tyre had picked up speed as it rolled down a steep hill near her home in Arruden Wood Nook, Holmfirth, on Sunday night. It crossed Arruden Lane, a track popular with dog walkers, before smashing into her car.

She believes teenagers rolled three or four tyres down the hill on the same night, in a repeat of an incident a few months ago.

Mrs Grist, 59, an artist and gardener, said: "It is no exaggeration to say that the speed at which the tyre travelled and the sheer size and weight would have been enough to decapitate anyone in its way.

"It is frightening to think that only a short time before we were collecting wood from the wood shed. Now we hardly dare venture out after dusk."

Three youths were seen on the top of the hill around the time the tyre was rolled and Mrs Grist, who lives with her partner Alan and son James, believes it is possible they are the same three boys who were seen and chased by a local farmer the last time.

"My car is insured but it will cost me hundreds in excess payment and lost no claims. But I am far more worried about the threat to lives."

Police are investigating.
