Wartime weeked in Brontë village 
but Nazi uniforms ‘not welcome’

HUNDREDS enjoyed a bit of wartime romance at a 1940s weekend – but a handful who dressed as Nazis caused some upset.

Businesses in Haworth displayed signs saying that Nazi or SS uniforms were “not welcome”.

Last year German visitors to the town were offended when they saw several people dressed up as Nazi officers.

This year organisers said it was not possible to ban the uniforms as it was a public place and there was no law against it.

Peter Hill, from the organising committee, said those who wore such costumes in previous years were genuine wartime “re-enactors” and were not making a political point.

The weekend event attracts around 20,000 every year. A handful of men dressed in Nazi uniform for this weekend’s event.

Yesterday, one of the organisers said those in Nazi uniform were not welcome.

“Unfortunately (because) the event is held in a public village we can’t prevent anyone attending, only discourage them.”

Proceeds are donated to an armed forces charity.
