Watch this space... Art museum marks construction milestone

IT IS an art museum inspired by one Yorkshire's most famous daughters and yesterday guests gathered to mark a major milestone in its development.

Developers handed over the keys of the partially-completed The Hepworth Wakefield, named after of one of the 20th century's greatest sculptors, Dame Barbara Hepworth.

It will provide a home for a gift of 30 sculptures by Dame Barbara from the Hepworth estate. They will be exhibited alongside Wakefield's art collection including works by Graham Sutherland, Paul Nash and others and a changing programme of art exhibitions.

Yesterday director Simon Wallis told local dignitaries: "I have no doubt that Barbara Hepworth would have been absolutely delighted to see a building like this named in her honour."

He said Dame Barbara's native Wakefield had influenced her early development.

Work will now begin fitting out the interior spaces including the learning centre, caf, shop and 100 seat auditorium.

The major new gallery, situated on Wakefield's historic waterfront, is due to open its doors to the public in spring 2011 and will be the largest purpose-built gallery outside of London.

Last year arts chiefs defended a decision to delay the opening of the museum with Mr Wallis saying it took time to arrange long-term loans of major pieces from galleries.

The Wakefield Council-led project has been designed by David Chipperfield architects and built by Laing O'Rourke. All major construction is now complete.

It is hoped the museum will attract 150,000 visitors from the local community, across Britain and from overseas.
