Watchdog calls for landlord rating website

Tenants should have access to a ratings website to give them more information on potential landlords, a consumer group said yesterday.

Nine out of 10 tenants said a website on which people could share experiences of landlords, in a similar way to customer feedback is given on eBay, would help them to make better decisions about who to rent a home from.

Consumer Focus said the majority of people renting in the private sector were unable to find out much information about their landlord before they signed a tenancy agreement.

Just 15 per cent of tenants had been able to find all the information they wanted, while more than a quarter were only able to get limited details or none at all, and a third said all the information they were able to gather came from the landlord themselves.
