Water improvement work to begin

WORK starts next week on a £300,000 scheme to improve the water in one of North Yorkshire’s most popular fly-fishing rivers.

Yorkshire Water has announced it is beginning the work at Darley Waste Water Treatment Works, near Harrogate, on Monday to improve the quality of water being returned to the River Nidd.

The project includes constructing a new filter bed that will enable the site to treat more waste while improving the quality of water being discharged into the river. The work is scheduled to finish by the middle of August.

John Bond, of Yorkshire Water’s community engagement team, said: “The work we are doing will bring environmental benefits to the River Nidd and we will be working as quickly as possible to complete this scheme.

“While work is ongoing there will be additional traffic accessing the site but we will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum.”

The River Nidd, which flows through Nidderdale, is a popular site for fisherman catching brown trout and grayling.

The work is part of a £250m scheme by Yorkshire Water at sewage treatment works across the region to improve the water being discharged into rivers.
