Waterways museum reopens after being transformed

VOLUNTEERS have given a waterside museum a makeover - in time for the Olympics. Goole’s Waterways Museum reopened at the weekend after closing in December.

The foyer, used as the main gallery, cafe, gift shop have been transformed with the help of a £10,000 grant from “2012 Ready” – ensuring that attractions are looking at their best for visitors in Olympics year.

Manager Rachel Walker said: “It has been a huge volunteer effort – most of the labour has been done by volunteers.

“We have a lot of skilled volunteers, woodworkers and joiners, so we have done as much as we can ourselves.”

She added: “People that haven’t seen us since December are quite shocked at what we have been up to because it is completely different. It is to attract new visitors and hopefully get some people back who haven’t been for a while and see what we have been up to.”

The foyer has been redesigned with hosting special events in mind, including the Folksail folk festival which is being held on September 3 to 4.

Saturday also marked the return of two Reuben Chappell paintings, John and Mary of Stainforth and the LHB of Grimsby, which have been conserved for permanent display. Chappell painted ships sailing in and out of Goole Docks.
