Way clear for new bridge to mark Jubilee

A DERELICT iron footbridge which has been in place for more than 70 years has been removed for a new £20,000 crossing to be put in place to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The footbridge was lifted from the position it has held over the River Leven in Stokesley for at least the last seven decades earlier this week.

The crossing, which was closed in October 2010 after being declared dangerous, is due to be replaced with a Jubilee Bridge by the end of the year. It is being funded by the Manorial Lands Trust, which is responsible for the bridge’s upkeep along with other land in Stokesley. Extra funding has been raised by the River Leven Group.

The new steel footbridge, which is being built in Shropshire, will provide a crossing from the south-west of Stokesley into the town centre.

A Great Broughton company, MW Crane Hire, worked with Stockton-based A-Plant Traffic Management to remove the old structure – with both firms providing their services for free.
