Way clear for official bypass opening

A NEW £21m bypass to reduce traffic passing through Cudworth and West Green, Barnsley, will be officially opened next week.

Barnsley Council leader Coun Stephen Houghton will unveil a plaque marking the road's completion at 11.30am next Wednesday.

The completed 5.2km bypass will reduce the volume of traffic, particularly heavy goods vehicles, using local roads in West Green and the A628 through Cudworth.

The Department for Transport provided 20.2m for the new road, with Barnsley Council meeting the remainder of the total 21.2m cost. The single carriageway bypass also links Ardagh Glassworks and Carlton industrial estates to the major road network.

Features of the new bypass include a new road bridge, a new rail bridge, five roundabouts, three underpasses and extensive drainage works which are designed to minimise the possibility of flooding.
