We will not rest on laurels after 100pc success rate, insists headteacher

THE Government may be demanding that all schools need to get 60 per cent of their pupils to master the basics in English and maths but for one Yorkshire headteacher even a 100 per cent success rate is not necessarily enough.

There were 20 primaries across the region who celebrated top marks in the Standard Assessment Tests (SATS) published yesterday with every 11-year-old pupil reaching level four – the standard expected of the age group – in both key subjects.

Ralph Butterfield Primary in Haxby, York was ranked as the best in Yorkshire because it got the highest number of pupils reaching this level, with 44 children sitting their exams this summer.

It was also rated as the 11th best in the country in the national league tables. Bentley High Street Primary, in Doncaster, was rated as the second best in the region and the 15th best nationally while Hopton Primary, in Mirfield, was ranked third highest in Yorkshire and 24th nationally.

Ralph Butterfield's head Angela Mitchell said; "Some of our pupils are capable of getting level five scores so we wouldn't just be happy with level four for them. Our results are down to the hard work of our children, staff and parents together but the most important thing is making sure children reach their potential."
