1. North’s role for Britain’s green future

The need to provide sustainable sources of renewable energy has become increasingly important and now the Government is being warned that a greater focus must be placed in the North’s green technology industries. After the scrapping of the £1bn carbon capture and storage scheme in Yorkshire, Ministers are being asked to do more for the industries to flourish. MPs had warned that the UK will miss targets for sourcing renewable energy by the end of the decade. The Aldersgate Group is looking to develop a strategy to deliver the targets on time. The report is set to be launched at a major conference in Manchester today.

2. Seven-day NHS ‘impossible’ to deliver under current funding.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt set plans to make the NHS a seven-day service, but NHS Providers chief executive Chris Hopson has said those plans now seem impossible to deliver. Mr Hopson said the current level of staff and money cannot cover important new policies and is now calling for more government assistance, The chief executive also said that the junior doctors’ strike is a result of the pressure induced by the seven-day service plan as they are struggling to meet the standards because of the lack of funds.

3. Yorkshire’s Indian Summer continues

The Met Office has said the hottest September day in more than 50 years could come this week. Temperatures are expected to peak in the South East between 30C and 32C on Tuesday and the north can expect highs between 20C-21C. Forecasters say if the temperature rises above 31.6C, it will be hottest day in September since 1961. Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said the warm air is coming from southern France and northern Spain. Britain’s Indian summer is expected to continue for the rest of the week.

4. Charlie Webster speaks out after her health crisis in Brazil.

Former Sky and ITV sports presenter Charlie Webster was told she was dying after contracting a rare form of malaria in Brazil during a cycling marathon. The 33-year-old checked herself into the hospital after she felt dehydrated but was later told her health was worsening and that she could soon die. Webster said she had a conversation with Death and almost felt “happy to die.”

5. Yorkshire student was asked to transfer funds back to man who bought her drink on a night out.

Abby Fenton, 18, said she was on a night out at The Viper Rooms in Sheffield when a stranger offered to buy her a drink. Two weeks later, she got a text from the man asking her to transfer the £6.50 back to his account. The 18-year-old from Barnsley said she transferred the funds back and hasn’t heard from him since, but took to Twitter to post the text of the exchange that has now gone viral.
