Flash floods close roads in East Riding

FLASH floods caused the closure of the centre of Pocklington today, although there were no reports of any damage to homes or businesses.

Heavy rain on the Wolds triggered a flood warning just after 1pm on Pocklington Beck, which overflowed and led to about 1ft of water inundating the town around Market Street.

Localised flooding was also reported in nearby villages, including Kilnwick Percy.

The waters subsided by late afternoon and both the Environment Agency and East Riding Council sent officers and engineers to the area to help with the clean-up and monitor the situation, with further rain expected tonight.

John Skidmore, head of streetscene services at the council, said: “In response to the flooding incident in Pocklington, the council has closed off the roads at Chapman Gate, Market Street, Market Place and Union Street.

“Water levels are receding and the council has sent a street sweeper to Pocklington to carry out any necessary street cleansing once the standing water has drained away.

“With a further forecast of heavy showers this evening, the council will continue to monitor the situation and has staff, sandbags and other equipment on standby at the Market Weighton depot ready to be deployed to assist residents and to support the Environment Agency who are responsible for the beck.”
