How much rain is expected to fall?

The Met Office has warned that the worst hit parts of the UK could see up to two months’ worth of average rainfall in just two-and-a-half days.

Simon Partridge, a Met Office forecaster, said: “It’s not a traditional sort of storm, it’s going to be windy but it’s not based on the wind strength at all, it’s really down to the disruption that’s being caused by rain.”

A major incident was declared in South Yorkshire ahead of the expected heavy rainfall, which began on Tuesday 19 January, as local authorities stepped up preparations.

More than 15,000 sandbags are at the ready around North Yorkshire, say the county council.

Public Health England issued a cold weather alert from “first thing” on Thursday 21 January until 9am on Monday 25 January for Yorkshire and the Humber, North East and North West regions.

The agency said the risk of flooding will amplify the public health risks of the severe cold weather.
