Victoria Road at the Bridgewater Place skyscraper in Leeds city centre was closed to high-sided vehicles.

The site has become notorious for its potentially-dangerous ‘wind tunnel’ effect during blustery conditions.

Severe delays were reported on the M62 eastbound between Huddersfield and Gildersome because of the winds.

There were also reports of traffic queues on the inbound side of the A653 Dewsbury Road in Leeds near the White Rose centre as a result of an overturned vehicle.

It was not clear, however, if the incident was connected to the stormy conditions.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning for the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber just after midnight.

Gusts of up to 50mph were expected inland, while people living or working on high ground were told to brace themselves for wind speeds of 60mph to 65mph.
