High winds give way to wetter weather

Strong gusts caused the suspension of inshore lifeboat training along the East Coast yesterday and the Humber Bridge remained closed to high-sided vehicles and caravans.

The M1 Tinsley Viaduct, off junction 34 near Meadowhall, and the A629 Woodhead Pass across the Pennines, were also closed to lorries.

Humber Coastguard said the planned weekly lifeboat training was cancelled along its entire area of the coast, from Cleethorpes to Berwick.

Watch officer Phil Saltonstall added: “It’s windy and as a result we haven’t had much people on the coast. It’s a factor but not generating a great deal of concern up and down the coast.”

Chris Burton, forecaster at MeteoGroup, said the winds were expected to have largely died down by today.

He said: “There are no expected strong winds over the next few days. There will be a ground frost in eastern areas on Monday but it will be mostly above freezing elsewhere. There will be sunny spells and scattered showers with most of the showers in western parts of Yorkshire, with most of the east staying largely dry. Some showers might be wintry over the highest parts of the Pennines.

“It’s looking quite wet on Tuesday with heavy rain much of the day, rain and drizzle on Wednesday and on Thursday showers with sunny spells.”
