Long delays were reported on the A65 from the north as traffic ground to a standstill on Kirkstall Road. Delays were also reported by drivers travelling from Dewsbury and Wakefield.

New roadworks on Whitehall Road, and an accident on the Armley gyratory system were blamed as drivers took to Twitter to vent their frustrations.

Said one: “It’s amazing how the roadworks only sprang up yesterday afternoon, after the Prime Minister and the Cabinet had left the city.”

Overnight, firefighters and police had to cut two people from a Vauxhall Corsa which came off the city’s Stanningley bypass, near the Dawson’s Corner roundabout at about 1.15am.

The car had collided with a tree before coming to rest facing the wrong way.
