So, what WAS the big bang that rocked Yorkshire this afternoon?

POLICE in Yorkshire were flooded with calls from worried residents this afternoon after a loud bang was heard across parts of the county.

Geological experts confirmed that there was no earthquake recorded in the area and the Met Office said no major weather problem could have caused the noise.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said it was now believed that a sonic boom from a low-flying aircraft was responsible.

People contacted the Yorkshire Post from as far apart as Harrogate and Ilkley to say they had heard the bang.

The police spokesman said: “Officers have not found any evidence of an explosion or any other incident that may have caused the loud noise some people heard.”
