Officials on the bridge said they had seen “unprecedented” levels of traffic as a result of the works.

The Highways Agency today said it was “genuinely sorry” for the chaos and admitted the queues were much longer than it had anticipated.

Work on 13 miles of the motorway began on August 1. The eastbound carriageway is set to be closed between junctions 2 and 3 until 6am next Monday while resurfacing and maintenance work is carried out. Long delays yesterday led to the closure extending back to junction 1 near Thorne.

Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy today tweeted: “I’m demanding the Highways Agency urgently review their decision to close the M180 totally during the current works.”

This morning, the agency installed temporary traffic lights on Keadby Bridge is a bid to alleviate congestion. Officers say they will monitor the situation to see if it improves the flow of traffic.

Spokesman Chris Holehouse said: “I am very sorry for the long delays experienced over the last two days.

“I acknowledge that these closures have been very disruptive to drivers and residents and that the routes around the closure have been heavily congested.”
