Video shows snow showers in North Yorkshire just hours after spring heatwave

It's no exaggeration to say that the weather in upland areas of North Yorkshire is changeable.

Residents of the Yorkshire Dales woke up to a snow shower this morning - less than two days after the UK enjoyed a spring heatwave and temperatures in the mid-20s.

Julia Tetley posted a video on Twitter of snow in her garden in Greenhow in Nidderdale, which is thought to be the highest village in Yorkshire and prone to extreme weather.

She had recorded the temperature as one degree with a feels-like reading of minus four.

Western areas of the Pennines were also struck by the icy showers, with snowfall recorded in areas such as Penistone and Hoylandswaine, near Barnsley.

While a weather monitor based in Huddersfield said it was the latest he had seen a snow shower pass through.

Although snow in upland areas is not unknown in May, the wintery weather comes after one of the warmest springs in memory, with temperatures that had melted the last remaining snow patches on the hills.
