Webcams idea for clothes factories to ease worries

A retailer is to place webcams in its foreign clothing factories in an effort to reassure customers about standards and working conditions.

Asda is installing webcams in two factories in Bangladesh where clothing is made for its George range. One will show workers checking the quality of jackets, trousers and shorts. The second will be placed in the finishing section of a factory making jeans, casual trousers and shorts, and shows the final stages of pressing and quality inspections before the garments are shipped to the UK.

Paul Wright, head of quality and ethics for George at Asda, said: "We work very closely with our suppliers to ensure high standards are maintained and we wanted a way to showcase our collective achievements.

"The factory owners are extremely proud to think that customers in the UK will be impressed by the standards of production."
