Weddings plan for refurbished town hall

A £3m refurbishment programme at Rotherham Town Hall is now complete and plans are under way to make the building available for weddings.

The nine-month project has seen what Rotherham Council called a "total re-organisation of the accommodation to create more meeting rooms and conference facilities".

A suite of rooms used by the council's mayor have also been updated and the council chamber has also been re-designed to include public viewing galleries, tiered seating and in-built modern technology.

The council said the building, which was the town's magistrates' court until 1994, had not been refurbished since then.

Karl Battersby, strategic director for environmental and development services, said the council would look to offer the building for weddings after gaining government approval. He added: "The improvement scheme was planned several years ago and the authority was contractually committed to the work. We believe the refurbishment has addressed the concerns of the public and as a result the town now has a smart multi-functional building offering a wide range of accommodation that is very much available for public use."
