Wembley victors on parade

YORK City players were cheered by ecstatic fans yesterday during a victory parade after securing the club’s return to the Football League.

The win was the club’s second victory at Wembley in only eight days and marked one of its most memorable weeks after the go-ahead was given by York Council on Thursday last week for a new stadium. The team, managers and staff set off from the club’s Bootham Crescent ground at 6pm before undertaking the parade through the city. The players then greeted fans outside the Lord Mayor of York’s official residence, the Mansion House, where they were honoured with a civic reception.

The club’s communications and community director, Sophie Hicks, said: “It meant the world to the players to have the fans down at Wembley, and this was a way of saying thank you for all the support that we have received.”
