West Park 'tank traps' given the go-ahead by city councillors

THE critics dub them "tank traps", but controversial bollards have finally been approved as part of a new design for the entrance to a Hull park.

West Park on Anlaby Road, home to the KC Stadium, is undergoing the first phase of an ambitious 1.4m plan including steel entrance piers, dramatic lighting features and new paths.

Final planning approval was finally given at a meeting at Hull's Guildhall. Addressing councillors, Coun Rick Welton said: "It's a modern contemporary park with a new lease of life, an interesting combination of hard strong metals and imaginative filigree."

However detractors include Coun Sean Chaytor who called the columns "awful" and urged colleagues to think ahead 20 years "when they are put in a skip." Local historian John Morfin described them "uninspiring metal slabs" and branded the redesigned bollards "illuminated tanktraps", adding: "It's nice to know that Gateway (the regeneration quango responsible for the work) is ready for an invasion – but they are 70 years too late."

However others praised the changes made by designers since the proposals were last before the committee.

Work will take six months, most of it between the end of the football season and the start of the rugby season.
