Wetherspoons awaits licence verdict

LICENSING bosses yesterday deferred a decision on the licence of a Wetherspoons pub in South Yorkshire which was caught in several police sting operations selling alcohol to children.

The Old Market Hall, in Mexborough town centre, was caught out on at least three occasions according to Doncaster Council’s trading standards department.

So-called “test purchase” operations were carried out in February, March and October last year by police and council officers and on each occasion, youngsters were apparently able to buy drinks without being challenged by bar staff.

Officers from trading standards yesterday applied to the borough’s licensing committee to have the licence for the premises revoked, effectively calling for its closure.

But members of the committee adjourned the application to a date to be fixed, meaning that the pub will be able to keep trading until any further hearing.

Wetherspoons chief executive John Hutson travelled to Doncaster yesterday to represent the firm at the hearing and oppose any move to close the outlet.

It is understood that he will also attend any further hearing on the pub’s future.
