We’ve just won £2 million... Now will you marry me?

AN East Yorkshire couple were today dreaming of a luxury wedding in Barbados after scooping more than £2 million on the Lotto jackpot.

Wayne French, 44, and Becky Harrison, from Beverley near Hull, can now tie the knot in style after their numbers came up last Wednesday - four days after Miss Harrison celebrated turning 34.

Stay-at-home mum Miss Harrison turned to her partner of 13 years and asked him to marry her soon after she realised they had won.

She said: “When Camelot confirmed that we had actually won £2.2 million we both just went into shock.

“We’ve always wanted to get married but have never financially been able to, and now we can have the wedding of our dreams.

“Celebrating my birthday on March 24, then winning the Lotto jackpot four days later and now becoming engaged - it just feels unbelievable. It still hasn’t sunk in but we really couldn’t be happier.”

Asked about her marriage proposal, she added: “I didn’t get down on one knee, I just said I would like to get married now and he said yeah.”

Her husband-to-be added: “I have always thought I would like Barbados, to be able to walk on white beaches. It is possible now.”

Mr French said he intended to retire from his job as a support worker at a local hospital and find a “hobby”, as well as spend more time in the garden with their four children.

He added: “Being able to retire at 44 is an amazing feeling - not many people can say that. As we’ve never actually had a family holiday abroad before, top of the shopping list is jetting off somewhere nice and hot.

“We’re also looking at a new family car, possibly something sporty but still practical and buying our own home, something that we have always dreamed of doing.”

Mr French revealed how a playful kitten nearly wrecked all their dreams after he was caught playing with the winning ticket on the table.

“I was worried he might tear it up or run off with it so I thought I would keep it somewhere safe.

“I still can’t believe it has happened, it is unreal. We are still both in shock.”
