Wheels in motion on turbine factory

A mobile exhibition will take to the road this week so the public can see plans for the new Siemens wind turbine factory.

A bus will be touring areas closest to the development at Alexandra Dock over three days, starting on Wednesday.

Applications were submitted to Hull Council late last month for the development of a factory, office, storage and testing areas for assembling the turbines and manufacturing the nacelle element, which sits on top of the tower that houses the components and converts the blades’ rotation into electricity.

Hull Council is due to decide the application on March 7. Part of the plan involves re-routing a right of way, which runs along the waterfront. Representatives from ABP and Siemens will be on board the bus to answer questions about the plans and people will be able to see a fly-through of the proposed development.

As well as creating up to 300 construction jobs, the £210m plant, would employ 700 engineering workers and potentially support thousands of other jobs in associated industries.

Dan McGrail, Project Manager for Siemens, said: “Submission of the planning application for Green Port Hull marks a significant step for the project and is the product of months of detailed work and consultation by teams in ABP and Siemens. We now look forward to discussing our proposals with the wider public at these important consultation events.”

On Wednesday the bus will be at Victoria Dock Village Hall car park from 4pm until 7pm; on Thursday at Wentworth Way (on the road), New Bridge Road, from 9am until 11.30am; 12 noon until 1.30pm at the lay-by near Embassy Hotel, Hedon Road; 2pm until 3.30pm at the Marfleet Avenue lay-by near the old Fenner site, opposite Ceylon Street and from 4pm until 6pm at Rosmead Street, near St John’s church.

On Friday the bus will be at Queen Victoria Square, from 10am until 4pm.
