A toe-tapping event in York aims to convince the young there is more to brass bands than marching tunes and the sad notes that serenaded the death of the coal industry.

Eleven-year-old cornet player Imogen Brown, pictured, has been trumpeting the appeal of Brassed On!, an event that will see all five of the city's bands play together for the first time, in Museum Gardens, on the Sunday of the May Bank Holiday weekend

Festival director Kate Lock said they hope to introduce a new generation to the excitement and enjoyment of the brass band tradition.
