White Lion which dates back to 1657 is set for a makeover

ONE of the oldest buildings in Hebden Bridge is to get a facelift.

More than £400,000 is being spent on transforming the White Lion Hotel in Bridge Gate, and new owner Michael Grimes said he wants to create a great classic pub.

The buiding is undergoing extensive works including the external frontages, new signage and lighting, all ground floor areas, external courtyard seating arrangements, and transforming the main building bedrooms into boutique hotel rooms complete with Victorian roll-top baths.

Further cosmetic work is also being undertaken to the 50 capacity function room, and four courtyard cottages.

Mr Grimes said: “We will also be focusing on home-made classic ‘pub’ food with a modern twist, combining with a friendly atmosphere.

“Once the work is complete, hopefully the White Lion Hotel will return to its former role as the hub of Hebden Bridge.”

“I have known Hebden Bridge since a child, my home area being Haworth, and it has always been a very attractive town, with a real individual character and philiosophy, and a strong community spirit. The town and the surrounding area are stunning, with numerous attractions.

“Hebden Bridge is on the rise, which can easily been seen with the number of quality boutique shops that are now present. Transport links are also very good, in particular the rail network to Leeds and Manchester, which in turn is attracting workers within those areas to locate to Hebden Bridge. The Grade II listed building is due to reopen next month.
