Who pulled the plug? Canal is drained as lock gates replaced

THE Canal and River Trust is carrying out a four-week restoration project to replace both sets of gates at Thornes Lock on the Calder and Hebble Navigation, near Wakefield.

The new gates have been made at the nearby Stanley Ferry Workshop, only one of two facilities in the UK. In preparation, the canal has been drained and will be open to the public on Sunday, when visitors can explore the 5.5 metre deep trench and see the lock gates and historic stone work up close.
