Who's eaten all the pies? Farm celebrations provide the answer

PIE eating was on the menu as thousands of people attended the second year of a farm festival.

Yesterday's event was held at Farmer Copleys, the Pontefract farm shop, and organised with help from the Pontefract Heritage Group.

There was stiff competition in all the farm-related competitions, from welly wanging to bale throwing.

Chief welly wanger was Scott Barker with a big throw of 61 metres and 51 centimetres.

The child's welly throwing was won by Joe Hodge and the under-5s event was taken by Harry Copley, whose family hosted the event.

The bale throwing was won by strongman Richard Bailey.

Last year's event attracted more than 4,500 people and it was hoped this year might double that.

Other attractions included tug of war, street dancing performances, vintage tractors, food tasting and a hog roast.

The pie eating competition was won by Bob Newbould.

Farmer Copleys managing director Heather Copley said the pie eating involved eating as many steak pies as possible in 10 minutes.

This year she took the pies out of the oven well before the competition began because last time competitors found they were a bit hot for speed eating.
