But on Friday's 75th anniversary of VE Day, Councillor Steve Wilson will follow behind in a less glamorous vehicle - his consort's "pretend Jeep" - a bright mustard-coloured Nissan Juke.

Hull's director of public health Julia Weldon has advised that to comply with social distancing rules the pair cannot travel in the same car with the Beadle.

"She said she would be happy if we were in our own car. I absolutely agree with the advice," said Councillor Wilson.

Councillor Wilson and consort Karl Hudder, along with the Beadle will be the only people along with a representative from the British Legion present at a wreathlaying ceremony at the Cenotaph.

No other city councillors will attend.

They then will set off on a whistle-stop tour of a dozen street parties in the city from Bilsdale Grove in east Hull to Victoria Avenue in the west of the city - where residents will also have to comply with social distancing rules.

"Everyone has been written to to say not to approach us. People are not to invite me in for cake and not get too close," added Councillor Wilson.

"We've had to play (the ceremony at the Cenotaph) down. I think people feared encouraging a big crowd.

"Hull was one of the most bombed cities in Europe and World War Two is in our psyche.

"People would have come out in their hundreds and we can't risk that."
