The experienced forward, 28, has become the first signing of the Carlos Corberan era after joining on a three-year deal after his contract with Cardiff City expired.

Bradford-born Ward, who joined the Bluebirds from Rotherham United in the summer of 2017 for an undisclosed seven-figure fee, committed his short-term future to Cardiff by seeing out the remainder of the protracted 2019-20 season, despite seeing his original contract run out at the end of June.

Ward, who started his career at Leeds United academy, was keen on a return north with a move to former club Huddersfield ticking all the right boxes.

He said: “I am very happy. All my family are here in Yorkshire and Huddersfield, so it is the perfect move to be back home.

“I knew a lot of the people here. Then obviously (with) the new head coach coming in, finding out about his style of play, everything just seemed to click.

“It is class coming back and seeing familiar faces. Sometimes going to a new club can be daunting, but it always helps when you see the old faces.

“When I was here last, I was playing as a left-winger, but I have always seen myself as a striker.

“In the five years since I was last here, I have been playing games in the Championship and in the Premier League as a striker, which has helped me loads.

“Hopefully I can kick on here and help Huddersfield Town.”

A chance to link up with new Town chief Corberan also proved an enticing prospect for Ward, who struck eight goals for Cardiff last term.

“I have been told that every player will be told exactly where they need to be and exactly what they need to do in their position, in the team and to get in the team," he added.

“We are going to have an identity and that is perfect.”
