Widespread road disruption as marathon returns to York

As participants gear up for the third Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon and the inaugural 10-mile version of the race on October 11, organisers are advising of several road closures and restrictions which will be enforced on the day.

The marathon starts and finishes at the University of York’s Heslington campus. Its route travels through the city centre, passing through the medieval walls, and takes runners north eastwards out of the city.

Along the 26.2-mile route, participants will travel through, or close to, Stockton on the Forest, Grange Wood, Upper Helmsley, Stamford Bridge, Gate Helmsley, Turkers Wood, Murton, Osbaldwick and back the finish line.

To allow an event village to be set up, York’s University Road will be closed between Innovation Way and Green Dykes Lane next Saturday from noon, reopening at 9pm the following day.

Closures on the Sunday will begin from 6am affecting the following city roads: Walmgate, Hope Street, Leadmill Lane, Piccadilly, Parliament Street, Blake Street, Duncombe Place, Deangate, Goodramgate and Monkgate.

Closures further afield will be on: Heworth Green A1036, Stockton Lane, The Village, Common Lane, Northgate Lane, Holtby Lane, Murton Way, Bad Bargain Lane and Osbaldwick Lane.

Roads will reopen on a rolling basis, as soon as it is safe to do so.

Charlie Tatman, the marathon’s director, said: “Unfortunately with an event of this size a certain amount of disruption is inevitable and we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”
