Wildlife spectacle on display in woodland dawn chorus walk

FORESTRY Commission rangers have organised an early morning event which they hope will showcase the massive variety of wildlife living on a restored colliery site.

The dawn chorus walk will involve participants setting out at 5.30am, but experts say the walk through Dinnington Wood, near Sheffield, will be worth the eventual reward.

More than 50 species have recently been recorded by birdwatchers at the beauty spot which has been nurtured on land which was formerly part of a busy coal mine.

They include skylark, kingfisher and kestrel and new surveys say more birds are now being spotted in the newly created woods which also include wetland.

Rangers said they expected to top the record of 53 species set last year, and hope to see a high number of waders like little ringed plover and lapwing setting up home.

Birdwatchers say every dawn chorus is unique and although birds can sing through the night, the crescendo is reached a few hours after dawn with chiffchaffs and woodpeckers adding their contributions.

Ranger Dougie MacTaggart added: "Both woodlands bristle with wildlife at the crack of dawn. Birds are at their most vocal this time of the year, marking territories and attracting mates.

"But to see and hear the action, you've got to make an early start. The rewards are unforgettable and the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life."

The Dinnington dawn chorus walk starts from the Church Lane entrance on Saturday May 15. Booking is required on 01302 820278 and those taking part are advised to wear suitable clothing and footwear and take binoculars.
