William marks centenary of decisive battle

The Mayor of Amiens, Brigitte Fouré, read from a diary written by her wartime predecessor, Herménégilde Duchaussoy, who wrote that 8 August 1918 would 'remain famous in history'.

Among the local residents watching the service on a screen outside the cathedral was Sébastien Guitton, whose family were made refugees by the war.

He said: “It’s important for the people of Amiens to commemorate this battle and to remember the sacrifice of the soldiers who came here from all over the world and died for us.”
