Windmills keep visitors in a spin about art at urban farm

AS a boy Tim Boardman remembered enjoyable trips to the seaside and the fluttering of toy windmills.

So when he was asked to come up with an artistic project to reflect the environmental ethos of Meanwood Valley Urban Farm in Sugarwell Road, Leeds, he leapt at the chance of rekindling childhood memories.

And with a little help from his friends he has created a stunning effect on the farm roof of 500 seaside windmills whizzing away.

The young people on the farm’s educational programmes spent hours laboriously making the windmills – which measure three inches across and stand 12 inches high.

He then appealed for volunteers to form a human chain on Saturday to keep him supplied with windmills as he worked on putting them in just the right place.

Robert Paige, education officer at the farm, said the idea was to create a colourful, animated take on wind energy but also to provide visitors with some fun and the opportunity to take part in a zany art project.

Mr Boardman, a teacher at Grafton Learning Centre, said: “I remembered seeing windmills at the seaside and thought it would be interesting to create a colourful crop of them on top of the farm.”

The Windy Roof will be on show for the next few weeks.
